About Me

My name is Derek and I am 22 years old living in Colorado. In the summertime I work as a mountain bike/spin class instructor most of the time and in the winter I work at Vail as a snowboard instructor and also plan/guide back country snowboarding/skiing tours. I grew up mostly in Minnesota where I started snowboarding at 9 years old. As I progressed the Minnesota hills had little excitement to offer, so I moved to Colorado when I was 18.  I got my first job at Breckenridge Co. as a lift operator for the first winter and since then I've worked at Vail and partnered up with some friends giving back country tours on snowmobile. I can plan trips on a budget and even recommend some of the best hidden gems in Colorado or Wyoming, where you and your friends/family will be the only people picking your own lines for miles.
Along the way I have taken up mountaineering after my older brother. Together we have traversed 6 mountains above 14,000 ft including Castle Peak (Co.), La Plata Peak (Co.), Mt. Rainier (WA), and Mt. Denali aka McKinley in Alaska in 2011.

All my life I've been back and forth from the mountains rock climbing, ice climbing, boarding, and biking and I enjoy it very much. I usually have little time to do anything but recently (June 30th) I was in a mountain biking accident that left me with a shattered Tibia and broken Fibula so I figured I'd sit down and give advice on the stuff I know.
